The D Word by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke
In The D Word, Lisa Steinke and Liz Fenton prove once again what their website’s title proudly proclaims: Chick Lit Is Not Dead.
Those of you who have been around for a while may remember that I’ve previously reviewed (and loved) their first collaborative effort, I’ll Have Who She’s Having. Although sophomore novel efforts are supposed to be letdowns, no one apparently told Liz and Lisa.
I don’t think I’m giving too much away by saying that the “D word” in question is “divorce.” This book approaches the always touchy subject from a few different perspectives, most centrally that of Jordan, a newly divorced woman who starts regretting her decision when her husband moves on and that of Elle, a gal just starting to date a divorced guy with a kid (yes, you guessed it, Jordan’s ex).
As with Liz and Lisa’s first book, The D Word is written from two main perspectives that alternate throughout, and once again it works beautifully and seamlessly. The fact that these ladies have been friends for over 20 years is reflected in how well their writing voices mesh; if I didn’t know it had been written by two people, I never would have guessed, and that is a huge compliment.
I also love that the main characters are all likable but flawed, leaving the reader guessing throughout not only what the ending will be but also what would be “best” for all involved.
And did I mention how many laugh-out-loud funny parts there are? Liz and Lisa’s senses of humor shine right alongside their passions for reality television and pop culture in general.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes chick lit and/or is looking for a quick, fun summer beach read. It’ll also work if you’re simply in the mood to sit down and get lost in another world for a few hours.
Five espresso cups out of five, ladies.
P.S. As of this writing, The D Word is just $2.99 (Kindle) and I’ll Have Who She’s Having is $0.99. Enjoy!
