5 post meme (nothing like a one-trick pony)

I was tagged by new blogging buddy Goofy Andie (that’s the name of her blog, I swear!) to do the following:

  • Post 5 links to 5 of your previously written posts. The posts have to relate to the 5 key words given below (family, friend, yourself, your love, anything you like).
  • Tag 5 other friends to do this meme. Try to tag at least 2 new acquaintances (if not, your current blog buddies will do) so that you get to know them each a little bit better.
  • Don’t forget to read the archived post and leave comments.
  • I like this meme because it gives me a chance to point out posts that new readers may have missed. I do keep a list of posts that new visitors can read to get to know me better–in my favorites tag above–but here are five more, per the meme:

    FAMILY:

    Big Gifts from Little Ones

This one is from May of this year and talks a bit about my niece and nephew back in the States and all the fun stuff they send me. Check out the label “family” for more family posts.

    FRIENDS:

    Calabrian Women’s Summit 2007

First published in March 2007, this post recounts my first meeting with fellow expat blogger in Calabria, Cherrye of My Bella Vita, and Dawn, who we’re still hoping finds time to write up one of these blog things. We had an awesome time and recreated the magic in August before Cherrye left us to get married in Texas. I know some of you, like me, are missing Cherrye lately, but she’ll be back soon to tell us all about it, I’m sure.

The label “friends” will take you to more friends posts.

    YOURSELF:

    Sunday Scribblings: Chronicles

I’ve written many, many posts about me and other than searching the “me me me” label, you can also find a lot of those on my sidebar.

But now I’m going to point you to one that says a little something different about me than any of the memes or lists I’ve done over the past 11 1/2 months. You might have missed this one as it was first published way back in January, less than two months into my blogging adventure. I hope you enjoy it.

    YOUR LOVE:

    Helping Hands

Another May post about how P surprises me every now and again. There are lots of P and love posts under the “love” label.

    ANYTHING YOU LIKE :

    Seeds of Truth

This last one was hard! I didn’t know which direction I should go in, but I finally decided on a snippet of my fiction writing since it’s a part of me that gets ignored early and often around here.

This May post was my first entry in a fiction writing contest, and I even ended up with a prize; check out other writing related posts under the “writing” label.

Now I’m going to tag 5 bloggers who are all doing NaBloPoMo, some of whom I knew previously and some I’ve just met. Show us what to read please!

    Alyndabear
    Candid Karina
    Gill
    Jill Althouse Wood
    Miss Eliza

30 days of thanksToday I’m thankful for:

Believe it or not, NaBloPoMo. I’ve realized through this experience that it’s not as difficult as I thought to post something every day–except for internet issues (fixed as of now…yeah!). Getting into the habit of writing, taking more photos, being more creative about posts–these are all good things, and I have NaBloPoMo to thank.

But even more than that, I’m so thankful to have met even more wonderful bloggers through the experience. One can never have too many blogging friends, I say.

5 Best Nights of My Life

Months ago, I saw this meme over at Sparky Duck’s place and then yesterday at Piacere, and it got me thinking about some of the best nights of my life–always fun to think about, so feel free to play along.

5 Best Nights of My Life

(so far, and in chronological order)

    1. Mom at The Wabash, Summer of 1993. I vividly remember and cherish the first time my mom and I ate in a restaurant that was a converted train compartment sitting in a parking lot of a motel in Durham, North Carolina called “The Wabash” (I don’t think it’s there anymore).

The steak and potatoes were delicious and the dimly-lit, cramped atmosphere tremendous; it really felt like we were on a train, headed somewhere exciting. All we needed were period costumes (and don’t think I didn’t consider it for future dining experiences).

I just remember feeling grown up for the first time in my life–like a woman having dinner with my mother. I was going into my senior year of high school, and it would only be another year until I was on my own, and in that train compartment is where it hit me.

    2. The night after college graduation, May 17, 1998. Specifically, a party hosted by one of my very best friends, who also happens to be from a nearby town in Pennsylvania (our high schools were rivals)–we just really “got” each other among fellow students at a university very different from where we grew up.

There was reminiscing, laughing, drinking, and absolutely no worrying about how we were all going to get *all* of our stuff packed and out of our places the next day–but the best was my friend’s dad’s toast, which did wonders in easing the realization that we’d never all be together like that again. I don’t remember the exact words, but I remember how I felt–and it warms my soul every time I think of it.

    3. At home college graduation party, June 20, 1998. A couple weeks later, my brother and sister-in-law kindly hosted a party at their house for my family and hometown (lifetime) friends. It is one of the last times that my girlfriends from high school and I (without significant others) spent hours upon hours together talking, laughing, drinking (of course), late-night swimming, and then taking an ill-advised walk up a highway. Guess you had to be there.

It was also the last full day I spent with my grandfather, who passed away three days later, hours after I had moved all my stuff from his and my grandmother’s house to Philadelphia to start my life there. I like to think he waited until he was sure I was OK on my own. Thanks Pap!

    4. The night after I found out I passed the PA Bar Exam, October 18, 2001. Also known as my 25th birthday. Bar exam results happened to come out on my birthday, and man was there reason to celebrate. That whole day was awesome, in fact, from repeatedly checking the website with my co-clerk in the Judge’s Chambers (and on the phone with another friend in a firm) to receiving a dozen yellow roses from my niece and nephew.

The evening was spent with my closest law school friends at a local watering hole (shocker), and it finally, finally felt like we were finished.

For those who haven’t gone through it, it’s hard to explain how anti-climactic law school graduation is because you start studying for The Bar a few days later, still seeing everyone from school for the next couple months until you take that horrid two-day test (three days if you take two bars together like I did). It’s only after finding out that you passed that you can close that chapter in your life. And what a chapter it was.

Incidentally, my grandmother passed away two weeks later–again, I’m pretty sure she waited until my life was somewhat settled for the moment. Thanks Mam!

[Finding out I passed the NJ Bar a few weeks later wasn’t nearly as exciting.]

Piazza Castello, where P and I met

Piazza Castello, where P and I met

    5. First date with P. May 9, 2005. Really fancy here, so brace yourselves. We met in the piazza after having dinner separately, strolled about the square, and then sat outside under the grapevines of one of the local bars the rest of the evening.

We talked, played cards, and talked some more, and then since the bar was closing, P walked me to my house, gave me a kiss on each cheek, and left me with those stomach flutterings you get when you know something good is happening.

    *sigh*

OK, now I’m not going to tag anyone since I was never tagged myself. But tell me, what are your five best nights? I thought this would be a lot harder than it ended up being, so give it a thought and you might surprise yourself–and make yourself really happy with memories in the process.

Leave them (or one or two, etc.) in the comments or write about them in a post at your place–just be sure to let me know where to find your list!

    stellaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Lovely Luna filled out this meme a while back, and ever since Stella Bella found out, she’s been pestering me for some blog time. Yeah, she goes through my archives when I’m not looking. Crafty, this one.

So here’s Stella’s first meme, as originally filled out by Mushu at A Spot of T. You can check out Luna’s meme here.

Not enough pooch talk for you? Check out our friends Phil and L over at the Dog Blog. They so crazy!

Stella BellaWhaddya mean you have to leave the house for three minutes?

    1. What kind of dog are you? One that looks a lot like the other dog around here. I’ve heard that I resemble a Basenji and also a Cirneco dell’Etna. Whatever. I’m cute. That’s all you need to know.

    2. Are you a boy or a girl? I’m all girl, and, in fact, expecting.

    3. How old are you? The humans think around 9 months, but I’m not telling.

    4. Name one thing you received as a gift on your last birthday. Haven’t even had one yet, at least not with these people.

    5. Choose one word to best describe your physique. Wiry, and my mind is wily. Hah!

    6. Share a quote. “Did I do that?” Steve Urkel.

    7. Have you ever been stung by a bee? If so, where? Please don’t put the malocchio on me.

    8. Who’s your strangest family member? Paws down, the other mutt. She does *everything* the humans tell her to. Weirdo.

    9. Who’s your favorite family member? Tie between the guy and the girl. They both give good petties and treats, so there’s really no telling the difference between them most of the time.

    10. Do you make an effort to be environmentally friendly? Yes. I’ll “recycle” anything.

    11. If you were given a blank canvas and water colors, what would you paint? The bunnies that the guy took me to see precisely once. I wonder why he hasn’t taken me back there. Oh they were cuddly.

    12. When is the best time for you to take a 20 minute nap? Only when everyone else is asleep, otherwise I’ll miss something.

    13. Your hair? “Every-freaking-where” says the one typing this.

    14. What do you want to be in 10 years? A mom. I’m a shoe-in.

    15. What you’re not good at. Saying no to strangers. I’ll go to and take anything from anyone.

    16. What are you wearing? Swollen nipples. It’s a statement.

    17. What aren’t you wearing? My chastity belt. Obviously.

    18. Your mood? Hungry. You got some biscuits in that pocket or what?

    19. Your kitchen? Lovely. Would be perfect if that other dog weren’t always up in here though.

    20. What are you thinking about right now? Why there’s chicken on the stove and not IN MY BELLY (said like Fat Bastard of Austin Powers fame).

    21. Love? I got your love right here! Gimme a kiss! Or an ear! Or a leg! Mwaaaaaaah!

    22. Foreign languages? I’m starting from scratch here, but I’m progressing nicely in English, Italian, and Calabrese. I’m smart.

    Happy Love Thursday everyone
    and Happy, happy Birthday Scarlett!

    5 Strengths as a Writer

Writers aren’t accustomed to singing our own praises, but it’s good to look at the positive now and again. Here are what I consider my strengths as a writer.

    Read on...

    what’s in a (middle) name?

Right at the beginning of my blogging break, new friend Sparky Duck of Philly Transplant fame *almost* tagged me with a meme. You see, he wanted to, but thought I wouldn’t get around to it since I was resting on my laurels (which sounds more flower-scented than it really is, by the way).

So he pseudo-tagged–he threw my name out there during the fateful virtual-finger-pointing moment to get my guilt going. And then Laura from Blame it on Paris thought I might enjoy this one, as did a chap named HART who selected me randomly from the list of 2k bloggers.

So here’s my Middle Name Meme, starting with the rules:

You have to post these rules before you give the facts. Players, you must list one fact that is somehow relevant to your life for each letter of your middle name. If you don’t have a middle name, use the middle name you would have liked to have had. When you are tagged you need to write your own blog post containing your own middle name game facts. At the end of your blog post, you need to choose one person for each letter of your middle name to tag. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged and to read your blog.

    A is for Aware

I like to know what’s going on, although not necessarily in a gossipy way. I don’t watch the TV news very often, though, because I usually don’t like its slant on things—always tragedy after tragedy, and let’s put aside any political leanings.

Yes, I know bad things happen all the time, but I’m not sure how it helps me to be a better person to know just how many people are murdered or in car accidents, etc. Don’t good things happen every day too? Yeah, I know that’s not news, but too much of the bad stuff brings me down.

In fact, I finally convinced P of this a little while back, and out of the blue the other day, he thanked me because he’s a much calmer person since we’ve rejected Telegiornale. I’ll take my news via word-of-mouth at the bar, newspaper, or on the Internet, thankyouverymuch, where I can click off (or just stop listening) when something is too disturbing–and I can also seek out feel good stories on my own.

    Yeah, I’m one of those.

    N is for Nerdy

In a good way, of course. I like to know things, which of course ties into the A above.

If curiosity killed the cat, well, let’s just say I’m happy I’m not a cat. I’m a big ball of “why?” and yes, that annoys some people, but I’ve learned that if you ask questions the right way, people often enjoy giving you the answers–the trick is to phrase things so you don’t appear to be challenging them, only curious.

It’s a tough line to walk, but I do it often. I’m a risk-taker that way.

And I’ll read just about anything I get my hands on, which was true even before getting English reading material wasn’t so easy. I only wish I had a better memory for things, because then I could actually use whatever knowledge I ingest.

I’ve noticed though, that the older I get, the harder it is to remember even the basics sometimes. I mean, I still remember what I had for breakfast and stuff, so I’m not going senile yet, but there’s definitely a change in fact retention.

    *sigh*

Ooh, and have I mentioned my addictions to the History Channel, Discovery, National Geographic….

    N is for Nifty

OK, well *I* think I’m nifty. Besides, this is one of my all-time favorite words. Say it enough and it just starts to sound wrong, like something Suessical, which pretty much explains why I love it. I’m a big fan of fun-sounding words–hi David!

It also reminds me of something one of my grandmother’s friends would say, and I was never sure if she was trying to be hip or just so far out of word fashion that she came back in.

Plus, come on, there aren’t a lot of great words starting with N out there, are there?

So now I must tag. Mwahahhahahaaa!

I’m going to tag the three lovely women who promoted my Bella Bags E-Party and Contest on their site–do be sure and visit them!

    1. Amanda: a stay at home mom’s point of view

    2. Lizza: I am Woman, See Me Blog!

    3. Janet: Life In Westcliffe

Some thanks that is, huh ladies?!

By the way, if anyone else mentioned it on their blog, please let me know, and I’ll give you some extra special linky love here soon.

And if you weren’t tagged, please don’t take this to mean you can’t still do this meme–meme away!
