she walks in beauty,
my mother

Wild purple poppy on Flickr

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow’d to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impair’d the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

~ Lord Byron

Thank you, Mom, for teaching me grace, kindness, and, above all, love.

Happy Birthday! Can’t wait to see you!

  1. Beautiful poem….happy birthday to your Mom!! When is she coming? Has she been to Calabria before?

    nyc/caribbean ragazza’s last blog post..Red tape, Spaghetti All’amatriciana, a nice tub

She’ll be here in June, and yes she’s been to Calabria once before when I first moved here–the only thing we’ve planned to do so far is actually a lot of cooking/baking experiments of all things πŸ˜‰

That was beautiful, Michelle. Makes me miss my mom even more. I haven’t seen her since Sept/06… πŸ™
I’m excited for you, thinking of all the fun you two will have together!

Well, I’m impressed! I know for sure that my beloved girlchild has never thought of one of the great romantic poems of the western world and me in the same thought. Not complaining, because said girlchild is just the best and very good to me, but I’ve just never inspired such classic references.

Judith in Umbria’s last blog post..Rewind: antipasto

Now Judith, you can’t know that for sure, for sure. I’ve always loved this poem, but when I was thinking of something to post for my mom, it popped in my head, and I knew it was perfect πŸ™‚

Beautiful tribute to your mom. I know it’s not the same as Byron but I can’t wait to hear my daughter recite her Mother’s Day poem at the top of her voice. “Cara Mamma!” Always turns me to mush.

Best wishes to your Mom. All the more poignant, as only last week mine passed away a victim of breast cancer. We spent most of my years a world away as she lived in Australia, but she had her whole family around her in her last moments in this life as she waited for me to see her again before she died. Best Mum in the world and nicest person you could ever wish to meet.
So glad that you can spend time with yours again. The distance makes you appreciate her even more.
Lovely poem and the fragile beauty of the poppy is most appropriate.

Thank you so much for sharing this Rosa; you remind us that we all need to appreciate those still with us each and every day. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Incidentally I noticed your comment came in at 4:29 on 4/29 πŸ™‚

Oh, that is so sweet! I especially like the tribute in the last three lines. I always think of this poem as a romantic offering to some object of lust or other, ’cause, you know, it’s bad ol’ Byron, but how nice to be able to apply that compliment in particular to your mother, and how lovely of you to think of it. (The photos are beautiful, too.)

Thanks Sara. I’ve always seen this poem as a kind of innocent admiration, so for me it fit well. Especially since my mom has raven hair…or at least she used to (sssh) πŸ˜‰

  32. 05.02.2008

Love that poem, love Lord Byron, and LOVE that you posted that for your mom.

You made me smile and get misty eyed.
How is it that you can touch my heart so deeply with so little effort?
    So glad you do.
