The Colors of Fall in Calabria

We do get some leaves changing color here, but fall in Calabria actually is quite colorful besides those warm autumnal hues I grew up with in the mountains of Pennsylvania:

1. Saffron flowers, 2. Chestnuts, 3. Persimmons, 4. Drying peperoncini, 5. Prickly zucchine, 6. Melagrane dal giardino, 7. Eggplant, 8. Hanging out, 9. Zucchine flower, 10. Lemon blossom after the rain, 11. Zucche, 12. Some of our olives in September, 13. Pomegranate seeds

Many of us expats in Italy have written about being more in touch with the seasons here than we were in our home countries, mostly because our routines are so much more ruled by what the weather is like outside. Over the past month or so, for instance, many of us have been busy gathering wood, picking olives, preserving the summer’s bounty for enjoyment all winter, and thinking about all the soups, stews, and dishes “al forno” we’ll be making for the next few months. The first “signs o’ fall” if you will.

And yes, for me, there have been other changes in the routine, like feeding the goats and locking the hens in the henhouse just a little bit earlier in the evenings and also picking back up some habits that had fallen by the wayside over a busy summer — wonderful daily commitments like yoga and working on a dusty old manuscript, and also weekend projects like finding little ways to make the house that much cozier.

We’ll be spending quite a bit of time in here in the coming months, after all.

Yes, fall here always inspires me to dig back into the good, warm, comfortable, and cozy . . . which comes first, the cooler weather or the nesting mentality? I don’t know, but I’m not complaining.

What says “fall” to you?

Lost for words good enough for that collection! Your pictures are so sharp and colorful…

Thanks Gil; we have such lovely fall colors here πŸ™‚

    One word: YUMMMMMMMMM!

    I agree πŸ˜€

  3. I hear you guys are having some flooding, just as we seem to be drying up. All well in your part of Calabria? Lovely pictures! I keep meaning to get organized to enter this, hopefully this weekend.

All is well here regarding flooding; we actually haven’t had *too* much rain, although it’s been cloudy for days…sun is out now, so hopefully that will at least dry some clothes for me! Hope you get to enter the contest!

    Beautiful!

    Thanks Pam!

A *first* for me was eating a melegrano right from the tree!
Also I adored the chestnuts and the smell of wood fires.
Thanks Michelle, there’s nothing like it here in FL…..

Ah Carol, the smell of wood burning…divine! I mean, not so divine for the trees, but…. πŸ˜‰

I LOVE your photos – they are gorgeous!! As for Fall, it’s my favorite season and nothing says Fall to me more than the changing leaves and crisp air. And nothing, to me, compares to that happening in the Northeast. As you know, I’m all over the U.S. all through the year, but for me, Fall is only Fall the way it happens in that part of the country. And this year, I was able to spend plenty of time there!!

Thank you πŸ™‚ I love me a NE fall too…I still have some photos from last fall to post!

Lovely, You have never mentioned your autumn crocus.

Those are wild saffron crocus flowers πŸ™‚

I’m in the midwest USA and for me fall is officially here when I see red leaves on the trees. I like crisp apples and spicy pumpkin desserts– but it’s those no-longer-green leaves that tell me things sure have changed around here. For the better I might add– I love autumn.

Ooh I’m with you Ally…apples, pumpkins, red leaves…LOVE!

    What lovely colors and pictures!

Autumn is such a beautiful season. I love it’s colors and atmosphere.

    Thanks Rosa!

    Beautiful photos!

Two signs of autumn here, fog and a cooling of temperatures (low 30sC), but that’s it ;/ It does mean it’s beach weather here in the Middle East though ;D

Yes, I was waiting to hear from my friends Down Under as well…no signs of fall there either, I imagine! πŸ˜‰

What a gorgeous collage Michelle, good luck with it for the competition entry. Since mid week we have been enjoying autumnal warmth 21C and sunshine here in Lazio, very welcome after the excessive rain of the previous weekend. Have been trying to be outside as much as possible to make the most of it while it lasts. The colours are now changing as fast as the leaves are dropping.

Over the years, different things have signified “fall” to me. When I was young, it was baseball because the playoffs took place in fall. Other years, it was Halloween. These days, fall doesn’t mean much to me, except the rush to earn more money to spend for the holiday season ^_^

  14. Hey Michelle.

Thanks for the heads up on the picture contest. It was fun just to participate. Good luck!

Yes, the photo(s) is beautiful and a lovely representation of Fall colors in Calabria. Thanks for letting us know about the contest. I participated, too. My three signs of fall are: Scent of crushed grapes, lemons and my lazy Sundays “blankie.” Good luck!

Reading this post made me warm and fuzzy.
It also made me realize that the nesting mentality doesn’t quite work in the US.
I love fall, but I dread the upcoming holidays because it’s so commercial:(

It really is a totally different feeling, I agree, Carole. I was in the States for Thanksgiving/Christmas last year, and the air is just different….

This is so pretty! I haven’t been by your blog in quite a while, but just spent some time browsing, and I love what you’ve done with the place!

By the way, quick question, what do you use to create these photo collages?

Thanks Karina πŸ™‚ I use Big Huge Labs. Enjoy!

  18. 11.13.2010

Such a lush photo collage! I love all the purple and red.

Thanks for mentioning the contest. I am doing NaBloPoMo this year and it made the perfect prompt for today. Glad the deadline was extended or I would have missed out.

    ~Tui

    So glad you participated Tui!

  19. Good luck and I love the photo collage. Pomegranates are so good and a real sign of fall.

Absolutely love your picture’s mosaic, very colorful indeed.
About fall…hmmm, leaves and rain, lot of it πŸ˜‰

We love the mosaic- inspiration for a “Rome-style” celebration of fall. The changing leaves on the Lungotevere are gorgeous.

    Thank you for coming by!
