Unscripted by Natalie Aaron and Marla Schwartz
Unscripted by Natalie Aaron and Marla Schwartz and is light, fun read set in the underbelly of reality television — a perfect setting as the authors have extensive experience in said underbelly.
Abby Edwards is a segment producer who isn’t exactly where she wants to be in her personal or professional life, so her eclectic “supporting cast” tries to help her along, each in his or her own way. Her screenwriter ex-boyfriend, for example, splashes intimate details about their former relationship on the big screen. Ahem. Life goes on for Abby as she throws herself into work, a possible new love interest, and various feel-good schemes by her girlfriends, including a detox foot bath party.
I really enjoyed this book; I looked forward to sneaking in a few pages of reading here and there throughout the day, and that is always a good sign.
I could have done with slightly less detail on the television show Abby was working on, a faster pace in the beginning, a bit more character development of the man Abby develops a crush on, and a more fleshed out ending, but because Unscripted kept me turning pages every day, I’m giving it:
I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a light chick-lit book full of chuckle-worthy situations and fun, quirky characters; there are a few (completely non-gratuitous) salty words used throughout, but if you don’t mind that as a parent, I think this would be a great book for teens as well as it touches on issues of self-esteem and standing up for oneself.
