weekend o’ cookies

Last weekend was spent baking cookies, and this weekend is being spent delivering them to their new homes. So far all of the Italians have expressed nothing but love for the American biscottini. As if we had any doubt, right?

So as I’ve already shown you, I made thumbprints and kolaches.

Now here are the ricotta cookies:

and my favorite, the chocolate chips:

Does this look like anyone to you?

More cookies tomorrow! Stay tuned!

i’m just gonna throw this out there…….that the smell of cookies (esp. chocolate chip) baking in the oven is the best smell EVER.

do you prefer soft and gooey cookies or more crunchy/hard and then dunking in milk?

i’m a fan of the soft and gooey:-)

      oh cookies….they’re the best!

    2. sognatrice on 22 Dec 2007 at 5:52 pm #

*Eryn, I’m *so* with you on that smell!

As for the cookie consistency, I like ‘em both ways depending on my mood.

The funny thing about these chocolate chip cookies is that they *look* hard but they’re not at all if they’re baked correctly–they’re actually soft, not gooey, but not cake-like either. They’re my absolute favorite consistency overall; my mom has definitely perfected this recipe for me :)

Of course because they’re so thin I tend to eat more of them than I probably should but hey, it’s really only once a year ;)

      *Maddy, how fun! Happy baking!

Well, I’ve been threatening for three days now to bake… vanillekipferl (recipe’s posted on my site), zimtsterne (cinnamon stars)… and to make my own marzipan so I can make marzipan “fruits” - so far, it’s just been far too hot for baking - 33 degrees C today - at least it won’t take much to soften butter should I need it!

mmmmm wish i could reach into my pc screen & eat one.

Sorry I haven’t commented on this thread of cookies as often as I should, but it is one great series. Have any of your relatives decided to surprise you with a trip to Calabria for Christmas?

I’ll take all the well done cookies. I’ll never forget the night I stopped at a friends house to pick up his business records (tax time) and his young daughter was crying because she had “burnt” a batch of chocolate chip cookies and was about to put them in the trash. I rescued the day and ate a bunch of the cookies while I was there and took the rest home with me. She reminds me of that evening every year when she drops off her tax info at my house!

      Merry Christmas to all!

Chocolate chip cppkies are medicine for whatever ails you!

I have made prune and fig filling for cookies that will be baked tomorrow. I wonder how many cookies are being homemade this weekend around the world???

    10. softdrink on 23 Dec 2007 at 2:20 am #

I made ricotta cookies today, for the first time ever. They’re soooo good, they’re giving chocolate chip a run for their money in my cookie affections.

    11. Stefanie on 23 Dec 2007 at 2:45 am #

I’ve never heard of ricotta cookies, but I am intrigued. Also, those chocolate chip ones look amazing!

    12. sognatrice on 23 Dec 2007 at 9:14 am #

*AV & A, oh my goodness that *is* too hot for baking! I’ve never even had marzipan–can you believe it?

      *Madelyne, buon appetito!

      *Alexandra, sounds fun–thanks :)

*Gil, no surprise visitors yet–and all the well-cooked cookies have your name on them (although I’m rather partial to them too) ;)

*Sharon, I can’t even imagine how many ovens are being turned on right now….

*Softdrink, I know what you mean! I remember the first time my mom made them–definitely one of the best cookies out there. Plus? They stay fresh and moist for the long haul. Yum!

*Stefanie, ooh you definitely have to try your hand at these–pretty easy so long as you don’t overbake (the cookies stay white so it’s easy to think they’re not done yet). They’re actually supposed to have shredded coconut on top of the icing but I couldn’t find any. I’ll have my mom send it for next year though.

As Softdrink said above, definitely sure to become a favorite :)

Did Blogger eat my comment? Well, fine. I’ll say it again.

I see Woody Woodpecker in that cookie. So does that mean something? Is this, like, a Rohrschach cookie or something?

    14. sognatrice on 24 Dec 2007 at 11:51 am #

*Sara, it wasn’t specifically designed that way, but I couldn’t help but notice there was a face in there when I started taking photos. I kinda see Hitler but with prettier eyes, so I like your answer better.

Ha ha ha HA ha! Ha ha ha HA ha!

      Get it? ;)

    15. sandierpastures on 24 Dec 2007 at 12:15 pm #

Michelle, can you share your chocochip cookie recipe? I’d like to bake with my 4 year old in the weekend.

The cookies look very delicious and worth trying to bake!

    16. sognatrice on 24 Dec 2007 at 2:08 pm #

*Grace, recipe on the way! Happy baking :)

    17. Dewey on 24 Dec 2007 at 8:41 pm #

Ok, that’s it, I’m coming over to your house! Be there in five minutes. ;)

    18. sognatrice on 25 Dec 2007 at 10:14 am #

      *Dewey, plenty of cookies left!
