i’m a nonna!
That’s grandmother in Italian, in case you didn’t know.
Now before you go thinking my Little Luna has succumbed to one of her admirers, let me show you the new little one around here (pictured with Mamma):

His or her brothers and sisters should be making their appearances later today and/or tomorrow, as this hen (our only brooding one) has about 10 eggs underneath her.
And before you ask–yes, someday this little one could be dinner. But let’s not dwell on that while s/he’s still yellow and fuzzy, umkay?

Very cute! I guess that means spring is here, no?

After watching the mom with her babies I could never eat one. Eggs yes.
It may be different when they aren’t right under your windows crooning at you.

How cute. Congrats!

How cute. Did she chose the bucket to nest in, or did you guys put her in there?
P.S. Love the coffee beans up top. Makes sense with your title and all.
Although, I had grown rather fond of those cool squares!

You’ll be begging people to take the eggs off your hands in a few months. Enjoy a nice double or triple yoker for me!!!
ps: Sorry about the Duke boys the other night.

Thanks for all the good wishes
Paolo, definitely no names allowed!
Jenn, that’s exactly what I said to P when he told me
Judith, I keep my distance, which helps. I might go down and see them when they’re all out, but as they grow into real hens/roosters, nope.
Giulia, when P saw that the hen was sitting on some eggs, he whipped up the bucket contraption; she did the rest
Glad you like the beans…I was kind of tired of the squares myself. I’m fickle like that.
Gil, you’re right about the eggs; we’re thinking of selling them to tourists
And about the Dukies, I’m actually kind of glad that they’re out of it just for a clean break to start thinking about next year. I don’t follow the whole thing too much any more, but they really seemed to self-destruct toward the end of the year. Incidentally, the whole thing about not making the Sweet Sixteen since ‘96? Yup, that was one of the years I was there…and in 95 (my freshman year), they didn’t even make the tourney! That whole Duke Dynasty thing came before and after my years–lucky me

baby chicks are always adorable.

When I was a kid my grandfather got 100 baby chicks every spring. I was my job to feed them. It also became my job to pluck them. I don’t think I ever ate them after that though. I do eat chicken from the store but not very often.
Great picture!

What little sweeties. But I could never ever eat them. I’d rather get my chickens nice and tidy from the supermarket (I know I’m a hypocrite).

Buon App!!
although, I coulnd’t eat them, either…
The Other Girl on 17 Mar 2007 at 9:54 pm #
Oh, so cute! And I know she’ll probably be featured someday in What’s Cooking Wednesday, but as long as you don’t post Before and After pictures, it will be fine. Well, not for her, but … you know.

HI. I’m checking in after the Ultimate Blog party.
How cute. My parents used to keep chickens.
